Introduction to ‘AN ALPHABETICAL INDEX OF THE VERSE-QUARTERS OF THE HARIVAṀSA PURĀṆAM’
The Mahābhārata is a sacred voluminous text composed by Sage Veda Vyāsa many centuries ago. This epic is widely regarded as a repository of both worldly and spiritual knowledge, citing the famous proverb: "What is not found in the Mahābhārata, is not found anywhere in India (the world)." Great masters such as Shrī Ādi Shaṅkarāchārya and Shrī Gauḍapādāchārya showed Their reverence for the text by writing commentaries on specific sections like the Bhagawadgītā and the Vis͟hṇu Sahasranāma.
The Mahābhārata consists of approximately 100,000 verses. Because of its vast size, finding a specific verse or line is compared to searching for a pearl in an ocean. To assist researchers and devotees, Shrī Aṅkur Nāgpāl, a PhD scholar, identified a critical need for a ‘Pādānukramaṇikā’ - an alphabetical index of each quarter (pāda) of every verse. The significant task was subsequently undertaken by Shrī Aṅkur Nāgpāl himself, who is a Sanskrit and Vedānta scholar from Delhi and a devotee of Shrī Chitrāpur Mat͟h. This work was carried out under the Blessings and Guidance of H.H. Shrīmat Sadyojāt Shaṅkarāshram Swāmījī, Mat͟hādhipati of Shrī Chitrāpur Mat͟h.
As the first step in this initiative, the team led by Shrī Aṅkur Nāgpāl is presenting the index for the Harivaṁsa Purāṇam, which is considered the ‘Khila’ (supplement/appendix) to the Mahābhārata. In Phase 2, the index for the entire Mahābhārata will be compiled and presented, and it is expected to be completed by next year.
Undoubtedly, this index will serve as a valuable tool for scholars, researchers, and devotees engaged in the study of the Mahābhārata.
